Tim Sullivan's funeral (LOC)

  • rockcreek said:
12/24/1909 - see "East Side Turns Out to Bury 'Little Tim'", 12/25/1909 New York Times. Sullivan was a popular Tammany operative and gangster.
  • Jim Flanagan said:
The hearse in the cited newspaper account has a rounded front, while this one has a sqare front. Might this instead be the funeral of "Big Tim" Sullivan, who died on Aug 31, 1913?
  • Wystan said:
Yes, this is the funeral of BIG Tim, on September 15, 1913 -- not LITTLE Tim, who died in 1909. Big Tim's body was unidentified in the morgue for two weeks after its discovery on railroad tracks.
  • Kristi (LOC P&P) said:
jimflanny and Wystan, Thanks for the info on this image and the others of the funeral of 'Big Tim' Sullivan. We will update this record as well as the other related images to reflect the details.

Sullivan funeral - bowery (LOC)

  • Wystan said:
In this Bain/LOC photo, taken at the docking of the IMPERATOR on July 17, 1913, Big Tim Sullivan is the tall man at the right. Dying of syphilis, maybe he already knew that he would be dead by the end of August:
  • Wystan said:
LOC -- "Bowery" should be capitalized.
  • Kristi (LOC P&P) said:
Wystan, Thanks for the information. We will add to the record and fix the typo when we update.
