Being pedantic this is bottled - not canned - food. Bottling is a process that can be carried out in a home environment and I imagine the whole purpose of the photo was to encourage women to grow and preserve their own food during the war. Bottling only requires strong glass jars with an airtight seal but no other special equipment. Canning can be carried out on a small scale but is usually a factory process on a commercial scale in view of the special equipment needed..

In American English "canning" means preserving fruits or vegetables in either metal cans or glass jars.

I respectfully disagree with John. The word canning does not mean metal only. In fact, it has nothing to do at all with the container it is in. It is actually a method of food preservation. Whether in a tin can or a jar, matters not. This method of food preservation is where food is processed and sealed in an airtight container. That's all it means.

The caption written on the photograph says "500-mile race, Indianapolis" -- was it not being called the "Indianapolis 500" yet?

More than I expected :) I really didn't know! I do suspect it's tough to find the point at which tag/etc. info is narrow enough to be accurate but still broad enough to be searchable.
