Another prize winner in the "Physical and Mental Perfection Contest" held by the National Conference on Race Betterment. Alvin was almost three years old, and was from Battle Creek like most of the other winners, including Virginia June Nay, featured a couple weeks back in the Commons uploads.

Likely the Rev Homer R. Salisbury, a missionary, who was lost on the P&O liner Persia in January 1916. According to Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger., January 06, 1916, Night Extra, Page 4, Col 1 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045211/1916-01-06/ed-... ""The Rev. Homer R, Salisbury, native born American citizen, sailed from Marseilles, France, on Persia. He formerly lived In Tacoma Park. D. C. Steamship captain confirms his sailing and believes him lost" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Persia_(1900) indicates that the Persia, under the British flag, was sunk by a submarine

In NYT of April 5, 1914, query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F50F10FA3D5E13738... "GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., April 4. -- Decision as to the winner in the first open battle between the new Federal Baseball League and organized baseball as represented by the National League is now up to the umpire, Judge Clarence W. Sessions, of the United States District Court for western Michigan. " Earlier, in Marc 21, 1914 NYT query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F00811FD3D5E13738... The case appears to be an attempt by the Federal League to get "an injunction to restrain William J. Killifer, Jr., formerly catcher of the Philadelphia Nationals, from playing baseball with any other than the Chicago Federals." The issue was a "reserve clause" in his previous contract with the Philadelphia team. It looks as though "Killifer" should possibly have been "Killefer".
