Here is a wonderful contemporary newspaper description of the first passenger train on this line in 1894. Not this particular train - they used Mr Danaher's, though Messrs Kerle get a mention. The passengers sat on slabs on the flatbed trucks, with a band and a choir, showers of sparks from the engine, attempted derailment etc - read all about it - Northern Star (Lismore) 17/01/1894 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/72419807 .

pellethepoet It is a ripper, isn't it? Really brings the ho-hum photo to life. I even went along for the ride using Google Earth, trying to spot the landmarks described. I think that the distance of time lends enchantment both to the photo and article. If it happened last week in the local rag, I would be yawning!

Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection Apologies! "Ho-hum" might be too strong a description for this wonderful old photo. Old trains do not normally grab my interest, because I do not know enough about them - mea culpa.

Couldn't find Lady Louisa on Wikipedia. Her father's and her husband's pages mention her as Lady Louisa Caroline. From this page I gather there was a part of the Munster Blackwater, that her father was responsible for (see entry under: Lismore Weir 1898). Jan Hilbrand Brink.

Eldest child of the 7th Duke of Devonshire, when her mother died in 1840 at age 28, Louisa, then only 14, took over the running of the household. A lover of nature and walking, she improved the gardens and created many trails along the Blackwater, some of which have since been subsumed by nature." In 2nd May 1904 King Edward visited Waterford. He travelled from Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin via Kilkenny, arriving at Waterford North Station at 12:50 p.m. The station was decorated in crimson and a salute was fired by the HMS Aeolus, which was stationed in the river along three other ships. The King was entertained by the mayor James A. Power at a reception in City Hall. The Royal party then visited the Waterford Show. The Royal party proceeded to the Waterford South Station to take the 16:05p.m train to Lismore. Before departing the King knighted the Mayor on the platform. The King then took the train to Lismore where he was greeted by the Duke of Devonshire and other dignitaries.
