Jacques Loeb was a German-born American physiologist and biologist. He was one of the most famous scientists in America, widely covered in newspapers and magazines and nominated many times for the Nobel Prize.

Joseph Chamberlain was an influential British businessman, politician, and statesman. Despite never becoming Prime Minister, he is regarded as one of the most important British politicians of the late 19th century and early 20th century, as well as a colourful character and renowned orator. He was Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's father.

Alberto Santos-Dumont was a Brazilian aviation pioneer, who designed, built, and flew the first practical dirigible balloons. He became the first person to demonstrate that routine, controlled flight was possible. Winning the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize on October 19, 1901, on a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower, made him one of the most famous people in the world during the early 20th century.

Thanks Harry, for providing more information about George Walbridge Perkins. The library has another photograph of him taken in Washington, D.C. around 1911. Do you think that is the Capitol building behind him and his daughter in this photograph? If so, it would mean that it was taken around the same time.

Dorothy died in 1990, at the age of 99, and had in 1960 given the Perkins family's huge estate in Riverdale, New York to the city. A somewhat similar photo of Morgan, at hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3b40359 , has a copyright registration date of 1902. I'm not certain, but I think the photo here is probably earlier. The "20 years ago" could well be relative to his death in 1913.

I agree swang that the pic shown here looks like it is earlier. That 1902 pic shows his hair a bit sparser, and a bit whiter. Although with Morgan's known aversion to having his photographic portrait made due to the problem with his schnozzola, it's quite possible either or both have been retouched in the nose area. Possibly other areas too.
