School House at Townsville Grammar School is a heritage-listed school building at Paxton Street, North Ward, City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Tunbridge & Tunbridge and built from 1903 to 1904. Townsville Grammar School opened in 1888 as a boys' school, but the school has accepted female students since 1893 when Mary Foley applied for admission. There was much debate over the admission of girls, with some parents considering them to be a disruptive influence on the boys' academic studies and that their admission would require expenditure on building modifications. However, others saw the financial benefit of their admission in a time of economic depression, when declining student numbers threatened the loss of their annual Queensland Government endowment. Like other schools in Townsville, Townsville Grammar was commandeered during the Second World War. The RAAF took over the buildings and grounds in February 1942 and its No.3 Fighter Sector HQ, which monitored and identified aircraft in the region and initiated air-raid warnings, were stationed at the school. Aerials and wires were visible on the roofs of the buildings, and huts were set up on the ovals to house members of the WAAAF. Meanwhile, the School moved into premises at Rosslea until January 1945, and did not regain full use of the whole grounds until later that year. The Grammar Schools Act 1860 enabled funding for secondary education in Queensland. By 1868, enthusiastic public subscribers had raised enough money to establish Brisbane's first Grammar School and first independent boys school. In that same year, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, laid the foundation stone at Brisbane Grammar School's original site in Roma Street. The new school opened in February 1869 with 94 students and four masters under the leadership of Headmaster Thomas Harlin. In 1881, the School was moved to its present site and the magnificent neo-gothic style Great Hall and classrooms were opened that year. With the opening of the Boarding House in 1886, the School became one of the first to provide student boarding facilities on site. State-of-the-art science laboratories were built in 1912. The School consistently anticipated educational needs, providing a resource library and language laboratory in 1968, before Commonwealth funding made them standard school facilities. With the purchase of the former Primary Correspondence School in 1993 at the School's southern boundary, BGS grew to accommodate 1200 students. In 2003, the Middle School opened for Years 6 and 7 and 1400 students were attending the School. Two important and impressive sporting facilities now complement the Spring Hill campus: The Northgate Playing Fields opened in 1997 and the Indoor Sports Centre in 2000. In 2010, the School opened The Lilley Centre, which combines technology and flexible learning spaces with a well-resourced library and programs to help students navigate their learning. It is now unnecessary to send their children to Brisbane, or elsewhere in the State, to educate them, as they have a well-directed institution in their own part of the country, where tuition of the highest order is available under the direction of one of the best English Public Schoolmasters." Townsville Grammar School is the oldest secondary school in North Queensland, opening its doors on Monday, 16 April 1888 at the North Ward site. The School has earned an enduring reputation for educational leadership in the North and has served and supported generations of families through day schooling and boarding. With a proud 130+ year history, the School has expanded in line with Townsville's growing community. Today, Townsville Grammar School has a student population of 1250 across three Campuses. The School's original building, 'School House' still stands proudly in the school grounds at the North Ward Campus. In 1903, Cyclone Leonta severely damaged School House, causing much of the building to be rebuilt in 1903-1904 to a design by Townsville architects, Tunbridge and Tunbridge.
