Yes, that's the old Madison Square Garden, called that because it bordered Madison, not Union Square, and the view is looking to the east. This was taken from Broadway side of the General Worth Monument, shown encased in protection.

The 1912 Olympic games were held in Stockholm, Sweden, from late June to late July. This event in New York City, on August 24, must have been part of a "welcome home" ceremony, for recognition of returning American athletes, and a celebration of their achievements.
