Emerald is a thriving rural service center with a rural training college, a large number of farm machinery sales outlets, a huge irrigation dam, and an airport. Established in 1879 as the base for the railway line, it has slowly grown to be the major regional center of the Central Highlands and the gateway to the Central Western district. The Capricorn hinterland contains the largest sapphire gemfields in the world. Emerald grew very rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s as a dormitory town for major new coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Little is left of Emerald's early history as it was ravaged by major fires in 1937, 1940, 1954, and 1968. Source: www.aussietowns.com.au/town/emerald-qld

I could not find much about the fire in Boulia, but here are some interesting facts about the place: As Boulia was also a part of Australia's inland sea more than 100 million years ago, you will be amazed by the extensive marine fossil display and the array of historical artifacts from early settlers, including machinery, saddlery, and hospital instruments. This can all be discovered at the Boulia Stonehouse Museum. Boulia is also home to some great Outback Events including The Boulia Camel Races which are held annually on the third weekend of July. Attractions include fireworks, bands, magicians, markets, and of course the marvelous camels. Source: www.queensland.com/au/en/places-to-see/destination-inform...
