The "View Over the Conservatorium" is of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary) at the time of Federation. It was Monday 27 May 1901. Read all about it (SMH 28/5/1901 p.5 onwards) - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/1342562?zoomLevel=2 Photo taken from the top of the dome on the Chief Secretary's Building. Odd thing is that there are no crowds around.

I recognised the octagonal tower of the Government House gatehouse but couldn't work out why it was so close to Macquarie Street. Now I realise they must have relocated it 50 metres east when they built the Cahill Expressway approaches.
