Bessie C. Merriam was involved in a society divorce reported in several 1913 New York Times articles. Her husband (Charlotte's father) was Captain Henry C. Merriam. Major Clarence Murphy was named as a correspondent. Henry accused Bessie of trying to shoot him and poison Charlotte.
