Information about the S.S. Deutschland that was renamed the Viktoria Luise from 1910-1921.

the web being what it is, there is some slightly contradictory information floating around. Wikipedia seems to imply that as soon as she was converted to a cruise ship, she was painted all white (as seen here on a company postcard , oceanlinerpostcards.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html .) however, clearly the name came before the paint job. Since the postcard seems to be from 1911, and the ship was renamed and re-purposed in 1910, this is probably her initial voyage into New York under her new name, because of her dressed out flags. her initial claim to fame: Launched in 1900, she won the Blue Riband from the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse of the North German Lloyd line, crossing the Atlantic Ocean in just a little over five days.

"PRINTED ON ILFORD BROMIDE" - suggests this is a picture of a print and not an "original" negative - I've noticed a lot of these images seem to be like that. I guess it was fairly common to make "copies" like that back then?

P & O LINER STRATHAIRD Pleasure Cruise to Fiji Under the command of Captain J. W. Hartley the P & O liner Strathaird is due from London tomorrow and with a berth at New Farm Wharf about 5:30 p.m. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leaving London on July 12 the Strathaird had 577 passengers which is an unusually large number for this time of the year. The steamer called at Tangiers and Gibraltar and on leaving Marseilles on July 20 she had 710 passengers. The usual calls were made at the Port Side Aden Bombay, and Colombo, and the weather was enjoyed during practically the whole of the voyage to Australia. The Strathaird, which has a number of round-voyage passengers, is a pioneer of the Australian cruising liners. She will sail from New Farm Wharf at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday on a pleasure cruise to Fiji and will be a full ship leaving Brisbane.
