What he is being notified about is that the Democratic Party has just nominated him to be their candidate for (re)election to the Presidency in the 1916 election. See www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=65393

jamica1: Thanks for the additional information. We will be sure to include it in our next update to these descriptions.

I made a similar comment here www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/14709949112/ This image appears to be taken September 2, 1916, following Woodrow Wilson's notification that he was nominated as the Democratic candidate for President for the 1916 election. The photo was taken at the Shadow Lawn estate in New Jersey, which served as Wilson's summer White House. The house burned down in 1927. A photo from the event is seen here: The Washington times. [volume] (Washington [D.C.]), 03 Sept. 1916. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress. (chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84026749/1916-09-03/ed-...)

Thanks Dean Z, we'll update the catalog record.

According to the diary of General Joseph W. Stilwell , Pershing was at Kaisersesch on March 18, 1919. But that might not have been his only visit.

According to www.buechel.de/og_buechel/Tourismus%20&%20Freizeit/Ge..., a large American troop show was held by General Pershing on March 19, 1919 at the 'Chausseehaus'. At this location is now the Büchel Air Base (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%BCchel_Air_Base) s. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alflen (in German).

B-59 : The diary and the newspaper both mention the 4th Division. So the photo probably was taken on March 18 or 19. www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/order-of-battle-of-divisions... says that the division was demobilized in early 1919.
