This was taken on Monday June 2, 1913. "Edward Payson Weston, America's famous long-distance pedestrian..." Veteran walker Mr. Weston was setting off from the plaza of the College of the City of New York (139th street) at noon for a walk to Chicago - a distance of 999 miles. Remarkably, Mr. Weston covered the New York City to Chicago walk over 36 waling daysin 1909. Something to keep in mind with all the singers on the program for the 4th of July pageant here - No loudspeakers, no amplifiers, no public address system, not even any decent opera hall acoustics. You needed a set of lungs in those days.

NYT of June 24, 1917 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9C01E5D7123BE03AB... indicated that the B. Altman regiment of the Home Defense League, commanded by Colonel J. H. Thompson gave demonstrations of drills and Red Cross methods in the Lewisohn Stadium of the College of the City of New York the day before (June 23, 1917). Mabel Riegelman sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Dixie."
