Striking cast members of the Broadway show "At 9:45" parade down Broadway in the Actor's Parade on August 18, 1919. The banner suggests 100% of the company supports the strike by Actor's Equity Association. Actors joined by stage managers, stagehands, chorus girls, musicians, variety artists and musical artists went on strike forcing shows all over the country to shut down. It was one of the most significant strikes in labor history as it reshaped the definition of labor.

"The parade of the actors down Broadway was staged despite the drizzling rain, which kept down the numbers of those along the line of the march but did not in any way affect the numbers or spirits of those in the procession. It was led by Major Reginald Barlow and several hundred actors who had served overseas, many of them in uniform."  [1]

The biggest stars of the time locked arms with their lesser known brethren – several thousand strong – and paraded down Broadway in full solidarity. The parade kicked off a week of benefit performances for Equity at the Lexington Avenue Opera House. Eventually, the producers had no choice but to recognize Actors' Equity Association (AEA) as the bargaining agent for their performers.   [2]

"At 9:45", by Owen Davis was performed at the Playhouse Theatre on Broadway, June 28 - October 1, 1919. It starred George Backus (1857-1939), Clifford Dempsey (1865-1938), Madeleine King and Noel Tearle who are likely shown parading in this photograph. Other members of the company (who may be in this photograph) were Idalene Cotton, Marie Goff, Harry Green, Nedda Harrigan, John Harrington, Frank Hatch, Frank Hilton, Peter Lang, Leo Mielziner, Gustave Rolland, Edith Shayne, and Robert Thorne. "At 9:45" was directed by John Cromwell. This photograph is looking north on Broadway between 37th and 38th St. The bottom of the sign ("ANDIE") for the Hotel Normandie can be seen top, leftish. (This view was likely taken from the 2nd floor of the Regal Shoe Store at the corner of 37th Street). Just beyond the Hotel Normandie is the Casino Theater (1882-1929), said to be the best example of Moorish architecture in the country. It was the first theatre with a roof garden, the first to be entirely lit by electricity, and the first to feature a chorus line – the Floradora Girls, who included Evelyn Nesbit, over whom Harry K. 1)The awning where I've added a note in the photo appears to say Knox's Hats. According to this blog entry, Arnold Hatters aka Knox Hats started out in Times Square. There's a 2005 New York Times story included. So perhaps this photo is from the times Times Square area way back when -- where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect.. 2)The lettering on the building (see another note in the photo) refers to the Garfield National Bank. According to an historic New York Times article, this bank was favored by Tammany Hall politicians. So again it appears that this photo is from Manhattan.

Looking at the hi-res version of this pic on the LOC site, there's a whole lot of text otherwise invisible on the Flickr photo. The cars have what appear to be signs with the last names of athletes--including Dukes, Donohue, Forhsaw, Erickson, Grumpelt, Gillis, Hellawell, Hebner, Hammond, Breed, Bowman, Rayner, Kiviat, and Kramer. (I've put notes on the photo detailing the barely-visible text.) Also, while it's a little blurry, there's a sign that appears to say "W 24 ST," which would make this NYC's Madison Square Park and environs. Maybe this was taken from the Flatiron Building?

Oh yeah. That building on the left has to be 200 Fifth Avenue a.k.a. the International Toy Center Building. So this is definitely around Madison Square Park.

Those are cable cars on the right. Though, I can't find a map of any NY cable car system

Since it's flat and there are no buildings, I'm guessing this shot is near Leschi. "Yesler Way was Seattle's most famous cable car line. It connected Pioneer Square, near the Puget Sound waterfront, with high-lying residential districts and the Leschi recreational area near Lake Washington. Ferries operated from Leschi to Medina and Bellevue. When the line was built, the residential and recreational areas did not exist and the area was almost completely uninhabited. All of the Seattle cable railways were promoted by real estate developers." "The line was promoted by the Seattle Construction Company, with the help of the patent trust's Pacific Cable Construction Company. It was designed and built by Pacific Cable's J M Thompson. Because the company was insufficiently capitalized, the Construction Company operated it until the Lake Washington Cable Railroad purchased it in 1889." This photo, along with another LOC photo, seems to have been taken near NYC's Madison Square Park, possibly from the Flatiron Building.

The 1912 Olympic games were held in Stockholm, Sweden, from late June to late July. This event in New York City, on August 24, must have been a "welcome home" ceremony, for recognition of returning American athletes, and a celebration of their achievements.
