    Interestingly, in most of these photographs of the tree-raising in Madison Square, there are, in fact, people in the tree either tying or releasing ropes. They are only visible if you view the larger digital files over at the Library of Congress website by following the link at Persistent URL above. Quite a job!

    The Victory Arch depicted in the photo was a temporary structure erected in Madison Square Park at the conclusion of World War I to honor New York's war dead. It would later be dismantled. Here is another photo of the arch in the US National Archives Flickr photostream.
