  Train is probably eastbound? Location about 34.3028 N 117.4725 W is my guess (track was realigned slightly in the 1970s).

During World War I she was a troopship for the Australian Expeditionary Force, and in World War II evacuated British children to Australia. She completed her final round voyage to Australia in 1950 and was broken up at Faslane. " from iancoombe.tripod.com/id25.html Interesting to see in this postcard album that by 1916 the Blue Funnel had been painted out - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemDetailPaged.aspx?itemID=447918# Evidently the funnel was the "highest ever built" -

  beachcomber australia Wow beachcomber thanks for all that info! Locating the bell is always fantastic, & we have updated our records to note where it is. Barnes seems to have had an interest in snapping the troopships as they left Melbourne, but I think this one was special as it carried his son away to war.

I would have been all choked up with emotion. Btw I just noticed that the 11 October was yesterday when you posted this to Flickr - intentional or just spooky?
