Winter in Florida billboard in New York City: New York, New York

This was taken on the corner of Cooper Square and East 5th Street in Manhattan. And this is what the corner looks like today.

It's also worth noting that the billboard up top is promoting George M!. The IBDB says this musical ran from April 10, 1968 to April 26, 1969. Assuming the billboard was replaced before or not long after it closed, I think it's safe to say this photo was taken in the winter of '68-'69, quite possibly just after the paralyzing storm of February 1969.

Very nice photo. The building the billboards are against was the home of "Beat" poet Leroi Jones and I think his ex-wife Hettie (if living) is still there. Today, a monstrous high rise one door to the north shadows the once private roof garden.

I love looking at what my home area looked like before I was born! This is fantastic in so many ways. Really brings out the Boston spirit in me. Thank you for making these beautiful photographs available!

Johnson Hedley (1851-1913) was the younger brother of Tyneside artist and woodcarver Ralph Hedley (1848-1913), . Johnson was also an artist, as well as a confectionary wholesaler and retailer, and he specialised in landscape paintings.
