  The Australian South Sea Islander community played a significant role in the development of Australia’s sugar and cotton industries. Between 1863 and 1904, an estimated 55,000 to 62,500 Islanders were brought to Australia to labor on sugar cane and cotton farms in Queensland and northern New South Wales. [1] These laborers were called ‘Kanakas’ (a Hawaiian word meaning ‘man’) and their recruitment often involved forced removal from their homes. This practice of kidnapping labor was known as ‘blackbirding’ (‘blackbird’ was another word for slave). They came from more than 80 Pacific Islands, including Vanuatu (then called the ‘New Hebrides’) and the Solomon Islands, and to a lesser extent, from New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, and Tuvalu.   The Rockhampton War Memorial was originally erected to commemorate those who served in World War One. It commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action in World War One, World War Two, the Korean, Malaysian, and Borneo campaigns, and the Vietnam War. A plaque has been placed at the cenotaph in remembrance of all who served. Seeds from the Lone Pine at Gallipoli were obtained from the Turkish Government in Australia's Bicentennial Year, and pines from some of these seeds now form part of an avenue to and around the Cenotaph. It was unveiled on the 16th November 1924 by the Governor of Queensland Sir Matthew Nathan and was designed by architects Hockings and Palmer and produced by monumental masons, F M Allen.
