Another prize winner in the "Physical and Mental Perfection Contest" held by the National Conference on Race Betterment. Alvin was almost three years old, and was from Battle Creek like most of the other winners, including Virginia June Nay, featured a couple weeks back in the Commons uploads.

I like very much this photo. Hi, I'm an admin for a group called QUAD & BUGGY, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

At six months, Virginia June Nay of Battle Creek MI won in the youngest category at a Better Babies Contest of 1914, a eugenics-inspired event, "because she was already teething and her fontanel had closed quickly. Her appearance, which was pleasant, was not a factor in her success."--Dorothy Nelkin and M. Susan Lindee, The DNA Mystique: The Gene as a Cultural Icon (University of Michigan Press 2004): p. 29. This photo was featured in the Proceedings of the National Conference on Race Betterment (vol. 1), 1914: p. 620. books.google.com/books?id=XAjiAAAAMAAJ
