So who ARE these guys? Is it the 150th Wisconsin National Guard Machine Gun Battalion??? Of course, Uncle Bill came home in a box, so he's not in this photo. What else can you tell me about it? flickr.com/photos/mausheimer/sets/72157608876116373/detail/ Excellent website lists Bill and his fellow soldiers and has great details about their unit. Scroll down the list and find SGT WILLIAM HEISS: www.b-1-105.us/history/ww1/150mgbn.html Another great website about this unit: jbaker.cafekyoto.com/from-champagne-to-the-marne.htm

Google Maps Street View of the same intersection today. The three brick buildings on the left side are still there as well as the church on the right side, but the statue and the curve front building are gone.

I'm not sure what unit this was, other than the Wisconsin National Gaurd. My third cousin William Hostettler died while serving with this unit. The old men on the left are Civil War vets. They are members of the local G.A.R. post. The man holding the flag is my great-great-great grandfather Adam Schluchter. He entered the Third Wisconsin Infantry in 1864 just in time to take part in the march to the sea with Sherman. During the march he was infected with malaria which he suffered with for the rest of his life, it finally killed him in his eighties. Most of the buildings in the picture are still there. Many of them look differant know. The statue at the time of the picture stood in the middle of the intersection. It now stand in front of the Calumet County courthouse. The building behind the statue was the Hotel Chilton which was torn down around 1987.
