    The pinnacle of "Yellow Journalism", the Maine was significant because the major American publications at the time blamed the Spanish for the sinking of the ship (it was later discovered to be the result of a boiler explosion, I believe) without any evidence. It caused a major uproar that eventually led to the Spanish-American war and Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.
