Cutting up MAINE (LOC)

The USS Maine was sunk in Havana Habor on 15 February 1898. In 1910 and 1911 a coffer dam was guiltaround the wreck, and water pumped out thus exposing it. The dead sailors were recovered for later burial at Arlington. Various parts of the wreck were cut up - some became souvenirs, but most of the cutting was done to break up the wreck with the ultimate purpose of making the harbor safe. The barnacle growth seen in the picture makes it likely this pic was taken during this process. www.arlingtoncemetery.net/ussmaine.htm
