In the late 1940s there was a revival of interest in the early 20th century New Orleans jazz music style. This advertising with a live band on a horse drawn bandwagon is no doubt a reference to it. The New Orleans bandwagons of 30- 50 years earlier would never have had a piano on them, just portable instruments. However since the band leader here was great jazz pianist Art Hodes, apparently an exception was made. Must have been some work getting the piano into the wagon.

Hammerstein's Roof Garden, operated by Oscar Hammerstein I. He opened it in 1904, above two theaters that he owned: the Victoria and the Republic. Jack Johnson, the African-American world champion prizefighter, appeared at the Victoria Theater in July of 1910, for an engagement of several days.

Thanks! Johnson was a key figure, maybe even a tragic figure, in the history of rase relations in America.

The New York Times, on July 12, 1910, ran a story about Johnson's tumultuous welcome in New York City.
