    The sacks were rented? Didn’t realize this was done. Great photo!

    plaisanter~ I didn't either, but they definitely all say "Hired Sacks"!

    The chances are that the horses and carts were hired on a daily basis also. Each horse owner would have a cart or two and would be hired each day when a load needed to be shifted. Not too many of the companies held a "fleet" of horses and carts as it was much less trouble and cheaper to hire in. I remember goind down the docks in Limerick in the early 50's and seeing lines of them waiting their turrn to pick up loads from ships at the quays.

    My grand aunt worked mending the hired sacks for Dennys.. The women used to sit around on the floor or on a pile of sacks and repair the sacks. They used an x pattern stitch within a square pattern of stitches. And a huge needle. Dennys had a premises in O'Connell Street in Waterford
