Depalma & his mechanic led the 1912 Indy 500 for 196 of it's 200 laps. Their Mercedes cracked a piston on the fourth turn of the final lap. Wikipedia says that Gil Anderson ranked 16th (but did not finish) in the 1912 Indianapolis 500 when his Stutz race car (pictured above) crashed on turn three. Reference: Wikipedia: 1912 Indianapolis 500
