Depalma & his mechanic led the 1912 Indy 500 for 196 of it's 200 laps. Their Mercedes cracked a piston on the fourth turn of the final lap. I looked at that Wikipedia article, and it said that the fastest car went 88 mph. Can you imagine going 88 in one of these cars?
