Depalma & his mechanic led the 1912 Indy 500 for 196 of it's 200 laps. Their Mercedes cracked a piston on the fourth turn of the final lap. I looked at that Wikipedia article, and it said that the fastest car went 88 mph. Can you imagine going 88 in one of these cars?

Keep in mind that when that photo was taken the car was the latest in race car design.
