  Neat cartoon. That bear looks like it's running for its life, as well :-P

  The artwork is fine on this cartoon like so many other political cartoons of the day. The meaning is obscure. Pine Knot is the name of his cabin retreat in the Virginia woods. There are circles with the words "NY calls for help". I suppose it could mean that he is being criticized for taking some time off when somebody wants him to do something for NY.

  So that date "ii" = 1902 might be wrong as Teddy Bears hadn't yet been invented. I wonder if it is short for 1911 ? Hmmm ...

  This was a "Continuous" show. You paid your nickel and entered; when you'd seen all the acts, you left. The brown pelican has its own perch, so it certainly traveled with the show. I don't see any chain on the leg, so it was probably a pet bird rather than a captured bird.
