    The Duke. Father of modern day surfing. Rode waves for 2 miles off Waikiki in the early 1900's.

    There is also a statue of the Duke at Freshwater Beach, Sydney, Australia near where he introduced surfboard riding to Australia. Great photo!

    In 1913, English artist Charles W. Bartlett began what was supposed to be a trip around the world. After leaving Japan, he and his wife scheduled a brief stop in Hawaii. They abandoned the rest of their travel plans and settled in Honolulu.
