beachcomber australia Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection Photograph taken at what we would now call Central Railway from a location called 'Railway Gates' - before the current station came into use in 1906. The rubble to the left of the shot would appear to indicate construction work on the future station is well underway. The tram is an N-class vehicle the first of which No 295 entered service in June 1901. This means that the shot was taken at least six years after the date attributed to it above and possibly closer to the date the new station came into use in 1906 (judging from the rubble). The tram is in it's original livery, and features open drivers' cabins, and looks brand new so it could be on its "maiden run"? So I'd date it circa 1905 in lieu of 1895.

beachcomber australia Note the shrubbery and wall on the left (the southern boundary of the NSW Benevolent Society's asylum) has given way to rubble in the main shot. Steam trams have given way to electric trams, and the original C-class trams have given way to N-class - the latter being mainly used on the George Street run. This shot of Kaye's shows the scene as it was between the two extremes pictured above. C-class trams dominate.

(As a footnote, I'm now wondering where was the photographer standing to take these shots?)

Some effort would have been asked for to position those cars so close to each other for the photo.
