SAPPHO seems to have flourished c.1890. There is mention in this article that " ... Irex and Ellie hoisted balloon jibs for the run home, while Xarifa and Sappho sent up squaresails. ... " - SMH 2/12/1889 - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13751679 . I think that is what we are seeing here, but I am no sailing or rigging expert.

Curator David Payne says of this pic: "Yes, that’s just what has happened, the sail to the right or starboard set on a yard forward of the mast is a square sail, which went out of date around the early 1900s, but was really hardly used after the late 1880s."
