Typical Row House (2 up against each other). Probably on Church Hill with the slope going to the river. All this stuff has been leveled. Moderenization?

I really like the composition of this picture.

I think that these houses were along one of the streets in Gambles Hill, perhaps Byrd street as it headed down the hill towards where the FRB is today. Gambles Hill had some of the worst-kept buildings and houses in Richmond before it was essentially cleared out for offices and parking lots in the late 1950's.

I'd like to definitively say that this is the old part of Oregon Hill that no longer exists, and it probably is. But, it may also be Church Hill.

Ye Olde Oregon Hill still exists in photo's. Looks like 611 South Belvidere Street, built 1860 and no longer standing. East side of Belv. St. at corner of Rowe & Belv. Street. See page 208, Old Richmond Neighborhoods by Mary Wingfield Scott. 609 Belv. in background with a barber shop at rear and 1 story frame building 615 Belv. in foreground per 1905 Sanborn map. 609 is also frame with asphalt brick siding much popular in 1940's. Tardus knows history of barber that lived in 609 Belv.
