She was Clara Dolores Machain, before becoming Mrs. George Washington Lopp. In the New York Times story of 2/3/15, she is referred to as Clara "Washington-Lopp", sender of two 15,000 pound shipments of cigarettes, cigars and tobacco to soldiers at the front. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9500E3D91538E633A... A newspaper article from May, 1916 describes her husband as shooting and wounding her and his stepdaughter in an argument about divorce. Other newspaper articles describe the weapon as a chisel. One account says she was Paraguayan by birth, her father being the the Paraguayan minister in Paris.

Typical Row House (2 up against each other). Probably on Church Hill with the slope going to the river. All this stuff has been leveled. Moderenization?

I really like the composition of this picture.

I think that these houses were along one of the streets in Gambles Hill, perhaps Byrd street as it headed down the hill towards where the FRB is today. Gambles Hill had some of the worst-kept buildings and houses in Richmond before it was essentially cleared out for offices and parking lots in the late 1950's.
