This was the shaft that 3 miners were injured, 1927, and the first medical evacuation by an aircraft in Australia. This proved to the A.I.M. that medical evacuations were possible. The first evacuation was May 1928 by A.I.M. which later become RFDS. OK, back to the image. This is late 1929 or early 1930. One tradesmen Dormitory is completed, tin sheds, Known as "Ranches" still erected for temporary accommodation, Staff accommodation and MIM employee housing under construction.

Mount Isa, QLD Famous silver-lead-zinc mining town known as the 'Oasis of the Outback'. Origin of Name John Campbell Miles, who found the deposits of silver, lead and zinc which lead to the formation of Mount Isa, named the settlement in 1923 after a Western Australian goldmine at Mount Ida. He never explained why he changed "Ida" to "Isa". History * Prior to European settlement the area was occupied by the Kalkadoon First Nations people. * The Kalkadoon First Nations people resisted the arrival of pastoralists in the 1870s and early 1880s. * The First Nations people's resistance ended when native police and white settlers retaliated with a bloody massacre in 1884. * In February 1923 vast silver-lead-zinc deposits were discovered by the prospector John Campbell Miles. * Mount Isa Mines Ltd was formed in 1924. * By 1925 Mount Isa Mines Ltd had taken over all the leases to the field. * The railway arrived from Townsville in 1929. * By 1929 Mount Isa Mines Ltd owned 370 ha in the area. The tool sharpening shop was completed on 30th December 1929. The housing was being constructed for MIM employees and the Dormitory and single men's quarters for MIM Employees as well.

Mount Isa is a small city located in northwest Queensland, Australia. Payable silver-lead ore was discovered in late 1923, which led to the formation of mining companies, with Mount Isa Mines becoming the sole company two years later. To support the company, the Queensland government surveyed a town site on the opposite bank of the Leichhardt River. However once the British company Russo-Asiatic acquired a controlling interest, Mount Isa Mines built its own town on a scale and form unprecedented in Australian mining. Isa Mines was a company town with its own stores, bank and recreational facilities. It was initially named Isa Mines to distinguish it from the incorporated town of Mount Isa, though over time the two settlements became known as Mineside and Townside. During the late 1940s and early 1950s with the price of lead at a record high, the Isa Mines settlement was extended with further housing and facilities.
