Mount Isa is the largest township in western Queensland. It is a mining town with an air of self-confidence and vibrancy. Mining is the town's raison d'etre and though it dominates the skyline and the local economy. Mount Isa is located 1,823 km north-west of Brisbane via Toowoomba and Longreach. This was the shaft that 3 miners were injured, 1927, and the first medical evacuation by an aircraft in Australia. This proved to the A.I.M. that medical evacuations were possible. Mount Isa, QLD Famous silver-lead-zinc mining town known as the 'Oasis of the Outback'. Origin of Name John Campbell Miles, who found the deposits of silver, lead and zinc which lead to the formation of Mount Isa, named the settlement in 1923 after a Western Australian goldmine at Mount Ida. He never explained why he changed "Ida" to "Isa". History * Prior to European settlement the area was occupied by the Kalkadoon First Nations people. * The Kalkadoon First Nations people resisted the arrival of pastoralists in the 1870s and early 1880s. * The First Nations people's resistance ended when native police and white settlers retaliated with a bloody massacre in 1884. * In February 1923 vast silver-lead-zinc deposits were discovered by the prospector John Campbell Miles. * Mount Isa Mines Ltd was formed in 1924. * By 1925 Mount Isa Mines Ltd had taken over all the leases to the field. * The railway arrived from Townsville in 1929. * By 1929 Mount Isa Mines Ltd owned 370 ha in the area. Gladstone, city, eastern Queensland, eastern Australia, on Port Curtis, an inlet of the Coral Sea. Originally settled in 1847 as a colony by the New South Wales government, it was abandoned in 1848 but was resettled by squatters in 1853. He sighted and named Bustard Head to the south of the city at Town of 1770. * In 1802 Matthew Flinders reached the area and named Port Curtis after Sir Roger Curtis, the Commandant of the Cape of Good Hope. * In 1823 John Oxley explored the coastline. * By 1856 the town had a population of 200. * The town was connected to Brisbane by rail in 1896. * By 1903 the town's population was around 1,500. * In 2011 the city's population was 32,000. * In 2015 the first shipment of liquified gas left for Asia from the Gladstone port.
