The Barron River is a medium-sized estuary system and is home to the beautiful Barrons Falls which is located approximately 18km upstream. The Barron River provides only a short tidal system, the saltwater turns into freshwater very quickly which isn’t an ideal system for holding large fish, some people have joked the Barron River got its name from being the “Barron” of life. Combined with its close proximity to Cairns and the Northern Beaches suburbs the river is under a lot of fishing pressure and boat traffic. However good fish can be caught here with the right tactics, knowledge, and local knowledge. Towards the mouth of the river is rock walls located on the outside bank of each bend, these rock walls are best fished at low tide with deep diving rattle lures preferably trolled. Classic barra lures are best here and should dive deep enough to almost hit the bottom. Where to go fishing near Barron River? Further to the west along the river is a patch of rocks, fish the rocks on low tide with deep diving lures for the chance at a Barramundi. One of the outstanding features of the Queensland Bottle tree is its bulbous trunk which, after around 10 years of growth, can be as large as 4 meters in diameter. This tree is extremely drought tolerant but ideally likes plenty of water which it stores between the inner bark and the trunk. This gives it its unique shape and the reason for its common name of the “Bottle Tree”. Its scientific name is Brachychiton rupestris. The name comes from its oddly shaped trunk, which resembles a chubby, narrow-necked bottle. The Queensland Bottle Tree does not have any known subspecies but does have some relatives: the Proserpine Bottle Tree, or Brachychiton Compactus, which can only be found near Proserpine, and the Ormeau Bottle tree, which is similar to the Proserpine Bottle Tree, with only slight variations in leaf colour and shape. Barney Point (1428) is the only swimming beach in the township of Gladstone and is located 1 km east of the city centre, on Barney Point. It is a 300 m long, east facing beach that usually only receives low wind waves generated inside the harbour. It is composed of coarse sand and pebbles and consequently has a relatively steep beach face, fronted by 200 m wide tidal flats. It is backed by a reserve that commemorates the founding of Gladstone, together with a picnic, playground and barbecue area. While the access, facilities and easterly views are all attractive, the adjoining northern half of the point is occupied by a large coal storage facility, with the jetty and wharf running off the northern tip of the point, all within 1 km of the beach. Barney Point Beach is the city's birthplace - Gladstone's first settlers landed here in 1847. It's also the location of the city's earliest grave, with historical plaques marking points of interest.
