The Toll Gate and Toll House on Lower Sandgate Road, Folkestone, Kent. Victoria Pier is in the distance. Lower Sandgate Road was a private toll road running from the harbour to Sandgate and belonged to the Radnor Estate. The brick Toll House was designed by the eminent architect Sir Sidney Smirke, who was responsible for the impressive British Museum's Reading Room, York Minster's nave roof and the Charlton Club in Pall Mall London. It was built in 1847 and replaced the original wooden toll house. Tolls were collected until 1973. In 1980 the Toll House was sold and is occupied today as a private residence. SANDGATE PATRIOTIC CARNIVAL It is anticipated that there will be a large attendance at the Patriotic Carnival to be held at the Sandgate racecourse on New Year's Day in aid of the funds of the Sandgate branches of the Red Cross Society, the Men's Auxiliary to the Red Cross, and the Soldiers' Comforts Fund. An excellent programme of some 70 sporting events has been arranged, and a procession, in which there are to be many novel features, will leave Moora Park at 9.30 a.m. Luncheon will be obtainable on the ground.
