It looks like the photographer scratched off the emulsion around Rube to separate him from the background.

Rube is holding an interesting glove, white in color.

Baseball is the American game. One person showing another person a different pitch. The uniforms haven't changed much but look at that glove. There is no form to it at all. I sure hope there is more padding in it than it shows.
