The Morning Oregonian. (Portland, Ore), October 11, 1916 used this photo in its coverage of game 3 of the 1916 World Series, with this caption: "Jack Coombs, Who Signaled for Relief In the Seventh. " The accompanying coverage explains " When Larry Gardner drove one over the right field fence in the seventh. Coombs called his infield around him and, after a brief parley, waved Jeff Pfeffer in from centerfleld to finish the game. Coombs was game enough and wise enough to know when a younger arm was needed, and his judgment more than made good when Pfeffer retired the last eight men in order, stopping the revived Red Sox attack with an abrupt halt.
