Thank you, LOC, for uploading these wonderful photos of the suffragettes...I am a male, but I have always been for women's rights, and I cannot believe that in this country, women were NOT allowed to vote for many, many years. I am sorry, but it just shows that men thought they were somehow better than women because they were stronger physically.

Anyone know who the unusually tall woman is in these photos, to the left in most of the shots?

She may be Eva Ward, who was a visiting suffragist from England.

Aha, that's exactly who it is--thank you! To confirm, I googled her name with "suffrage" and found a photo of her accompanying an article. The article mentions that she is "probably over six feet in height and... looks the part of a militant more than Mrs. Pankhurst ever did."

Speaking at the suffrage meeting advertised on the flier seen here, Carrie Chapman Catt has a close connection to International Women's Day (IWD). In 1904, she was elected to the first board of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance at a meeting in Berlin and reelected in 1906 in Copenhagen. She promoted suffrage for women in her travels around the world in 1911-1912, stopping in South and East Africa, the Middle East, India, China, and many other places.

Rosalie Gardiner Jones (1883-1978) was a wealthy Oyster Bay socialite and suffragist known as "General Jones"--she also had a law degree, and late in life was infamous for keeping many goats on her estate. www.newsday.com/community/guide/lihistory/ny-past1215,0,6... Jessie Belle Hardy Stubbs MacKaye was originally from Chicago, and one-time president of the Milwaukee Women's Peace Society. She was Columbia University educated, and legislative chair of the Women's Peace Society in NYC. She was noted for "urging all women to remain unmarried or to refuse to bear children until some efficient means should be devised to secure the world against the devastation of war."
