This is getting ready for the Washington hike, in 1913. More Bain/LOC photos of the ladies on the roof:

Rosalie Gardiner Jones (1883-1978) was a wealthy Oyster Bay socialite and suffragist known as "General Jones"--she also had a law degree, and late in life was infamous for keeping many goats on her estate. www.newsday.com/community/guide/lihistory/ny-past1215,0,6... Jessie Belle Hardy Stubbs MacKaye was originally from Chicago, and one-time president of the Milwaukee Women's Peace Society. She was Columbia University educated, and legislative chair of the Women's Peace Society in NYC. She was noted for "urging all women to remain unmarried or to refuse to bear children until some efficient means should be devised to secure the world against the devastation of war." Jessie Stubbs died by suicide in 1921. While grieving her death, husband Benton Mackaye began formulating the idea that became the Appalachian Trail. www.erikness.com/Stories/bentonmackaye.html

The poster on the banner is for a mass meeting at the opera house, Brooklyn Academy of Music, January 9th, featuring Rev. Anna Shaw, Mrs. Carrie Chatman Catt, and Max Eastman.

August, 1913: Before the Suffragette Caravan left New York for Boston, pulled by a balky horse that the ladies had named "Asquith," (after the British prime minister, who also had been balky in offering support to the cause of woman suffrage) the participants (three British suffragettes and Ida Craft, an American Salvation Army colonel, with tambourine) released several homing pigeons, whose flight back to Boston was supposed to precede and herald their own arrival in that city.
