NYTimes reported in 1913: "HEMPSTEAD, L.I., May 22. -- The townsfolk here are waiting with much curiosity for the suffrage pageant which Gen. Rosalie Jones has arranged for next Saturday afternoon. On that day those interested in the suffrage cause, will march from Mineola to this place. At the trolley junction the parade will be reviewed by Assemblyman O'Keefe and officials of Nassau County." Flower girls in the springtime would make sense, too. Two days later, also in the New York Times: "Hempstead, N.Y., May 24. -- Three miles of public highway between Mineola and Hempstead were crowded this afternoon with a long line of automobiles from all parts of Nassau County as they followed the suffrage pageant, in which 500 women and a few men marched as enthusiastic upholders of the cause."

This appears to be the actual unveiling ceremony on July 6, 1905, as a large American flag that draped the statue of Sacajawea was removed.

"THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, MANY of whom stood in the hot sun for hours," gathered at 2:00 p.m. on July 6, 1905, on Lakeview Terrace by the Columbia Court of the Lewis and Clark Centennial and American Pacific Exposition and Oriental Fair in Portland, Oregon. The crowds had arrived to witness the unveiling of a bronze statue of Sacajawea ... "Speakers at the event ... included Abigail Scott Duniway, Oregon's own suffragist, and Susan B. Anthony, legendary leader of the woman suffrage movement." – Fair Connections: Women's Separatism and the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905.

The inscription on the plaque reads, "Erected by the women of the United States in memory of the only woman in the Lewis & Clark expedition, and in honor of the pioneer mother of Old Oregon." [1]  

Check out the Guide to the Dye Family Photographs Collection 1855-1945 in NWDA Eva Lucinda Emery Dye "made Sacagawea a heroine of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the eyes of the public." She was also active in the Oregon Woman's Suffrage Association. "As president of the Sacajawea Statute Association, Eva was instrumental in hiring Alice Cooper to sculpt the copper statute of Sacagawea exhibited at the Lewis and Clark Exposition in 1905. The statue became a permanent fixture in Washington Park at Portland, Oregon." Her book The Conquest, which was written for the Lewis and Clark Centennial, "portrayed Sacagawea as a model of 19th century true womanhood."

The woman on the RIGHT* can't be Susan B. Anthony--she might be another Miss Anthony, but Susan B. died in 1906. *fixed on advice of Wystan.

That's Anna Shaw on the left . . . .

Whoops, yes, of course. I'm never good at left-right (don't give me driving directions or ballroom dance classes, it's hopeless). Should have double-checked myself. The woman on the left certainly is Anna Shaw! Now who's on the right?

Anna Howard Shaw (February 14, 1847 – July 2, 1919) was a leader of the women's suffrage movement in the United States. She was also a physician and the first ordained female Methodist minister in the United States. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Shaw Florence Jaffray "Daisy" Harriman (July 21, 1870 – August 31, 1967) was an American socialite, suffragist, social reformer, organizer, and later, a courageous diplomat. “She led one of the suffrage parades down Fifth Avenue, worked on campaigns on child labor and safe milk and, as minister to Norway in World War II, organized evacuation efforts while hiding in a forest from the Nazi invasion.” In her ninety-second year, U.S. President John F. Kennedy honored her by awarding her the first “Citation of Merit for Distinguished Service.” She often found herself in the middle of historic events. Does everyone agree it is Harriman? I recognize her as Harriman, but I can be wrong.
