This is 1931-built 195-foot yacht VELERO III. (her spelling was variously recorded by different people). I believe she was taken into Naval service in 1941 as the patrol yacht CHALCEDONY (Navy documents record her name as the "ex-VELERO III"). www.alternatewars.com/Archives/Ships_Data_USN/NS-250-011_(138-145)_PY.pdf A search on Google images under her name "VELERO III" yields many good photographs.

I'm going to be talking about how Flickr relates to archives access in a few weeks - do you think putting this image on Flickr has helped laypeople find this image and use it for their needs, or has it just driven more users to ask for the actual photograph in the National Archives? Thanks.

Hi photosharp, Thanks including the National Archives in your presentation. So far, anecdotally, we have not seen an increase in requests for reproductions of photographs since we joined the Flickr community. It seems that making photos available on Flickr has allowed the public and researchers to find images like this one of Nixon and Elvis and use them for their needs. Interestingly, althought Nixon and Elvis is the most requested photo at the National Archives, it is not the most viewed on our Flickr photostream. This photo of two women at U.S. Steel in oxygen masks has gotten almost three times as many views (3,064 compared to 1,087 views): www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3660777810/.
