Rhinelander Waldo (New York City, May 24, 1877 – Garrison, New York, August 13, 1927) was appointed the 7th New York City Fire Commissioner by Mayor William Jay Gaynor on January 13, 1910, and resigned his position on May 23, 1911 (less than two months after the deadly Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire) to accept an appointment as the 8th New York City Police Commissioner. Smith (February 22, 1857 - July 27, 1933) was the Commissioner of Docks in New York City. John Sibley Whalen (born June 30, 1868 in Rochester, New York) was Secretary of State of New York from 1907 to 1908. Eugene Noble Foss, (September 24, 1858-September 13, 1939) was an American Representative and governor from Massachusetts, as well as brother of George Edmund Foss. Mayor Fitzgerald was nicknamed "Honey Fitz" and his daughter Rose married Joseph Kennedy to form the political dynasty. Eugene Foss gave Joe his first political job when he was Governor of Massachusetts (maybe at the bequest of Mayor Fitzgerald?)

In the movie, "Ragtime," Rhinelander Waldo was played by Jimmy Cagney.
