High up on the wall at extreme left, nearest the camera, is the monument of Admiral Sir William Penn (1621-70) founder of Pennsylvania. His half-armour and the banners of Dutch ships he captured in battle can be seen above, and remain there today.

What a fantastic pair of monuments, any idea where exactly they are?
  • Andy said:
This is the Kirkham Chantry at Paignton. Must be some sort of record, me knowing something that Churchcrawler didn't! ;-)

Great work there, thanks so much for identifying this one at last :-) I can feel a trip to Devon coming on at some stage. (I hope Phil's not feeling too red faced, perhaps CC is human afterall LOL ;-)
  • Andy said:
Human??? Phil?? Never. ;-) Good job I know him! I have to confess I didn't actually know it beforehand. I searched Google images with the words gothic chantry tombs. It popped up on about page 5. That technique's often effective if there's something distinctive about the image to search on.

LOL, the great man is a shade above us ordinary mere mortals isn't he! ;-) I had a quick search for this a while back but to no avail, it does seem somewhat under represented online (next to nothing from this church on Flickr); Ironically I seem to remember reading there was something good here years ago, but had long forgotten the place when wracking my brain for potential locations..
