Prince Murat was the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. He moved to the United States in the 1820s and eventually settled in Tallahassee, where he became a planter and married Catherine Willis Gray in 1826. Murat died in 1847 and is buried in the Old City Cemetery. Catherine died in 1867 and was interred next to her husband.

Florida Memory Murat was the son of Napoleon Bonaparte's favourite Marshal, Joachim, who was the real "Flash Harry" of the Emperors army! He was considered the most dashing of the group of Marshals and an outstanding cavalry man. He was one of those who deserted Napoleon after Waterloo and was eventually executed when he sought to stir up a revolt in his former kingdom of Naples in an attempt to regain the throne! As he stood before the firing squad he called on the firing party "Soldats! Faites votre devoir! Droit au cœur mais épargnez le visage. Feu!" "Soldiers! Do your duty! Straight to the heart but spare the face. Fire!"
