    Note the cabbie and horse drawn cab waiting in front of the building - of the type featured in the Sherlock Holmes television series made in England - depicting the 1880s or early 1890s

    I think all ofthese images should be geotagged with lat and lon to indicate thier location, even if they are demolished nowdays.

    This building stood corner of george and Wynyard streets. Designed by Sulman & Power architects, this project gave Sulman the opportunity to demonstrate fire-retarding construction, using porous terra cotta casing elements. Built by McLeod Bros, It was the Head quarters of the Mutual Life Association of Australia & later the French Bank. The building consisted of basement & 6 upper levels.It was one of the earliest examples of a fire-resisting structure. The structure was of wrought iron beams & floor beams encased in terra cotta blocks. The staircase was also fireproof. The façade was clad in Pyrmont stone & the granite columns from Scotland.It had a 28m frontage to Wynyard St & 14m frontage to George Street .Topping out in June 22,1889, it was the citys tallest building for a few short months Although buildings such as Chief Sec Bldg & Mort & Co woolstore were approx same height of 102ft/31m, this building was built using the “skyscraper “ method. Iron frame with fast passenger lifts..The historic structure was demolished in 1969 to make way for the Bank of NZ. cheers

    Site of the present day Queen Victoria Building (QVB) and upmarket retail shopping precinct, in substantially the same building although minus the street awnings and columns. the interior has been rebuilt retaining many original features.
