NYT of January 3, 1917 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F20710F93F5C1B728... has piece from Berlin indicating that a Dr. Hammann had been "until the turn of the year, the Director of the Intelligence Department of the Foreign Office." A few weeks earlier, NYT of November 8, 1916 select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F50617FE395E1373... describes the retirement of a Dr. Hammann, the "veteran director of the German Press Bureau." Note spelling error in transcribed caption. Two "n"s at the end.

If this is the guy, he is Otto. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Hammann (in German) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Hammann (much shorter, in English) babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015047696532;view=1u... is a drawing of Otto Hamman in 1922 or so. That is certainly of a much gaunter face. I'm neither convinced this is the German Dr. Otto Hammann, or convinced that it isn't.

swanq and B-59: Thanks for combining your efforts to confirm Hammann's identity. We will correct the spelling and a bit more about him when we update the record.
