This is an 80 h.p. Pfalz E.I... you can tell because it only has two attachment points for the wing warping/bracing wires. The E.II had an additional warping/bracing wire further out. The E.III was a "Parasol" (high-wing) armed version of the Pfalz A.II (license-built Morane-Saulnier L-type).

The pilot is early Pour le merite ace Otto Parschau who scored 8 victories and then was killed in late summer 1916. It was he who went around with Anthony Fokker when demonstrating the first M5k MG to the Crown Prince and others at Douai to garner support. The type was introduced to Boelcke, Immelmann, and others at this time. Kurt Wintgens, along with Parschau were two early exponents of the Fokker, but also flew other types, like the Pfalz E.I-II.

Mechanics work on the unarmed Pfalz Dr. II, next to a Pfalz Dr.I. In the background on the left is a Friedrichshafen G.III.
