A PhM Phillips Collection photo from 90 degrees to the left got me started on this Flickr armchair archaeology - The current (Jan 1914) issue of 'Afloat' has a great history of Mosman Bay by Graeme Andrews. Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons C-class tramcar - note the side mounted trolley pole. I'm willing to be corrected, but this may indicate that the shot was taken in 1897 or 1898. The C-class entered service in 1896.

I will see if I can find an exact date via Trove - the date is important because it might help date the entire album, which seems to be October 1897 from this march in George St -
