This is Lyndhurst, a Gothic Revival mansion begun in 1838 and expanded in 1864-65. Alexander Jackson Davis was the architect. Financier Jay Gould bought it as a summer home in 1880. After his death it became the home of his eldest daughter, Helen, and, on Helen's death, his younger daughter Anna took charge of the property. Anna left Lyndhurst to the National Trust for Historic Preservation on her death in 1961. Today it is a museum. Lyndhurst web site. Ravenswood is 85 kilometres east of Charters Towers and the town is now classified by the National Trust. Ravenswood developed as the first major mining town in north Queensland after the discovery of gold in 1868. It experienced the boom as a gold mining town and gradual but inevitable decline. This picture was taken at the time when Ravenswood's population was at its peak. Have you ever been to Ravenswood? We'd love to hear your stories and see your photos.
