pennylrichardsca & Harry Angstrom: Thank you for your comments! Based on the information provided by both of you, this seems to be J. Harvey Ladew. The topiary artist Ladew was a bachelor and only in his late 20s at the time of this image, while J. Harvey has two children in this photograph, and appears a bit older.

Elise Ladew was Mrs. W.R. Grace so maybe the caption refers to one person rather than two people. Elise inherited a fortune from the leather industry. Her brother created a topiary garden of renown in Maryland. She married into another wealthy family, the Graces. Grace is the famous name of a large diversified chemical company, formerly associated with a distinctive curved office building on 43rd st in New York. Elise Ladew of Glen Cove, L.I. married William R. Grace in 1914. They had three daughters. Her husband's father, also William R Grace served two terms as the Mayor of New York. Elise's husband William studied "for a time" at Columbia, joined the family company but soon left for Ingersoll Drill company, which his father also controlled. His brother, Joseph P. Grace became chairman of the W.R. Grace Company. The husband died in 1943 (obit dated April 1, 1943) at age 64.
